Tom has recently joined the teaching staff at B. H. Stangel, Inc. He comes to us after thirty years with the N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation. His career with the DEC began after obtaining a Forestry degree from Paul Smith’s College. He started out working for the Bureau of Forest Insect & Disease Control where he conducted Gypsy Moth egg mass surveys, Scleroderris Canker studies and performed general tree diagnoses for land owners. The Bureau of FIDC eventually morphed into the Bureau of Pesticide Management where Tom spent the next 25 years. While there, he performed regulatory functions, such as inspecting pesticide businesses, applicators & manufacturers, responding to pesticide-related complaints & spills and drawing pesticide samples.
But Tom’s other duty, and his greatest pleasure, was being an educator. During his 25 years in the Bureau, Tom conducted hundreds of training sessions for individuals wishing to become certified pesticide applicators. He was also a regular speaker at various pest control industry trade shows & monthly meetings. He has a relaxed, humorous style which is very conducive to a student’s retention of information.
